Evening Post article today...

An article I wrote a while back was re-featured today by the Evening Post as part of its ongoing Great War coverage.

It was the story of Captain John Stanley Strange and his service in the Swansea Battalion.

There will be more articles in the Post as the months go on to August 2014.

NOTE: NOT ALL THE ARTICLES THAT APPEAR IN THE POST ARE INCLUDED IN THE BOOK!

I CAN'T DRIP FEED THE UNPUBLISHED BOOK TO THE NEWSPAPER...

  1. Really looking forward to your book coming out. Your book about the Swansea Pals inspired a number of visits to the sites of the 14th Battalion- from where they entered the frontline in 1915 to where they were on 11/11/18 and all battles in between!
I learned from it that as a child I lived next door to a Pals survivor, although the next of kin address list shown in the book had transposed his address with his brother who died near Richbourg St Vaast !! That could have made for a traumatic information of death letter.

  2. Thanks for that! Glad you enjoyed it and found it helpful. Don't worry - the addresses in the book were compiled by officials at Swansea Corporation; the army would have compiled their own details from info on the enlistment form that the man filled in. Most men could write, I think. Less chance of error.

New book out in October; more info on here as the date approaches. I'll be selling copies in Swansea Museum at the Swansea local history book fair (slightly discounted price) - that's usually the last Saturday in October but might be the first Sat in November. Best wishes, Bernard

  3. Good to hear, officialdom seemed to have had a problem with Levi Gilchrist as his CWGC grave reference number was wrong too when I visited the cemetery in St Richebourg St Vaast! Although he is laid to rest next to all those other men you list in your book.
Found your blog today as I wanted to check whether Pte. David Thomas, who I think was connected to Morriston in some way, managed to leave Swansea before he died on 27 March 1915 and I did not have your book to hand.Regards Len

  4. My husband is the great grandson of Captain John Stanley Strange and it was a lovely article that you wrote about him in the South Wales Evening Post

    1. Hi Tracy and thanks for the comments. John Strange was quite a man and I have almost 3,000 words on him in my forthcoming book 'Swansea in the Great War' - a story well worth telling. Best wishes, Bernard
